This book is annotated with a rare extensive biographical sketch of the author, Andrew Lang, written by Sir Edmund Gosse, CB, a contemporary poet and writer. The book: The recent revival of interest in the Maid of Orleans has resulted in the production of a considerable amount of romantic fiction, of which the most important example is Mr. Lang's " A Monk of Fife." The subject is one almost ideally suited to Mr. Lang's hand, appealing, as it does, to his deepest interests and intellectual sympathies - how warmly the noble poem in his latest volume of verse may witness. The romance before us pretends to be a translation of a French manuscript in the Ratisbons Scots College. Whether this pretence be wholly a bit of mystification we are not concerned to inquire; for all practical purposes "A Monk of Fife" is an original work of Mr. Lang's imagination, although it follows historical fact more closely than such fiction is wont to do. As to the style of the book, it may be described, in Mr. Lang's own words, as "not imitating, in manner, the almost contemporary English of the ' Paston Letters,' or the somewhat earlier English style of the Regent Bedford, but merely attempting to give a moderately old air to his (Mr. Lang's) version of a French - which, genuine or imitative, is certainly, in character and spelling, antique." The story is told in the first person, and is essentially the narrative of a young Scotsman, fleeing from his own country in consequence of a brawl, and finding service with the French at such a time as to be concerned in the siege of Orleans, and to become closely associated with the fortunes of the Maid. The narrative is at times labored, as the result of a wish to omit no historical fact of importance, but is for the most part highly readable, giving a vivid impression of the stirring life of early fifteenth-century France.

Norman Leslie of Pitcullo, whose narrative the reader has in his hands, refers more than once to his unfinished Latin Chronicle. That work, usually known as "The Book of Pluscarden," has been edited by Mr. Felix Skene, in the series of "Historians of Scotland" (vol. vii.). To Mr. Skene's introduction and notes the curious are referred. Here it may suffice to say that the original MS. of the Latin Chronicle is lost; that of six known manuscript copies none is older than 1480; that two of these copies contain a Prologue; and that the Prologue tells us all that has hitherto been known about the author...

ARABIAN NIGHTS: Andrew Lang's 1001 Nights & R. L. Stevenson's New Arabian Nights breathes new life into the rich tapestry of Arabian folklore and fantasy. This anthology skillfully combines the traditional tales retold by Lang with Stevenson's inventive narrative in New Arabian Nights, highlighting a broad spectrum of literary styles from the straightforward narrative to richer, more allegorical contexts. The collection serves as a culminating point where the intricate old-world charm meets the nuanced reflections of contemporary moral dilemmas, providing readers with a vibrant exploration of themes such as morality, betrayal, and the supernatural, all while maintaining a lush, captivating aesthetic that is both enchanting and thought-provoking. The contributors, Andrew Lang and Robert Louis Stevenson, are both towering figures in the literary world, each bringing a unique philosophical and stylistic approach to the anthology. Lang's meticulous preservation of folklore complemented by Stevenson's pioneering influence in the adventure and fantasy genres allows the collection to resonate with historical and cultural significance. These works collectively showcase a period of vibrant literary experimentation and contribute substantially to the genre of magical realism and narrative complexity. This anthology is an essential addition to the library of any aficionado of classic literature and folklore. Through Lang's faithful yet vibrant retelling and Stevenson's creative expansion, readers gain access to a myriad of cultures, historical periods, and ethical questions, all while being kept firmly engrossed by the enchanting narrative style. As such, ARABIAN NIGHTS not only serves as a rich educational resource but also as a compelling invitation to revisit and question our understanding of traditional narratives and their place in modern discourse.

This book is annotated with a rare extensive biographical sketch of the author, Andrew Lang, written by Sir Edmund Gosse, CB, a contemporary poet and writer. It is not without hesitation that this book is offered to the reader. Very many people, for very various reasons, would taboo the subjects here discoursed of altogether. These subjects are a certain set of ancient beliefs, for example the belief in clairvoyance, in 'hauntings,' in events transcending ordinary natural laws. The peculiarity of these beliefs is, that they have survived the wreck of faith in such elements of witchcraft as metamorphosis, and power to cause tempest or drought. To study such themes is 'impious,' or 'superstitious,' or 'useless'. Yet to a pathologist, or anthropologist, the survivals of beliefs must always be curious and attractive illustrations of human nature. Contents: Preface. Introduction. Savage Spiritualism. Ancient Spiritualism. Comparative Psychical Research Haunted Houses Cock Lane And Common-Sense Apparitions, Ghosts, And Hallucinations. Scrying Or Crystal-Gazing The Second Sight Ghosts Before The Law A Modern Trial For Witchcraft Presbyterian Ghost Hunters. The Logic Of Table-Turning The Ghost Theory Of The Origin Of Religion

Helen of Troy Andrew Lang - A story in rhyme of the fortunes of Helen, who, in Greek mythology, was the daughter of Zeus and Leda, wife of king Menelaus of Sparta and sister of Castor, Polydeuces and Clytemnestra. Her abduction by Paris brought about the Trojan War. Helen was described as having the face that launched a thousand ships. Helen or Helene is probably derived from the Greek word meaning "torch" or "corposant" or might be related to "selene" meaning "moon".

Andrew Lang (31 March 1844 – 20 July 1912) is known for being a Scots poet, novelist, literary critic, and student of anthropology. He is most famous for his folk stories and fairy tales. The majority of these essays appeared in „The Cornhill Magazine” in 1904. The table of contents includes „The Case of Elizabeth Canning”, „The Murder of Escovedo”, The Campden Mystery, „The Case of Allan Breck”, „The Mystery of Kaspar Hauser – the Child of Europe”, „Queen Oglethorpe”, „The Mystery of the Kirks” and others. With „Historical Mysteries”, Andrew Lang has reached up some of the most puzzling historical mysteries of Europe – primarily dealing with Scottish and French incidents. Some of these mysteries involve the assassinations of famous people, while others deal with regular people who have been involved in mysterious events.

The aim of this book is to prove that the Homeric Epics, as wholes, and apart from passages gravely suspected in antiquity, present a perfectly harmonious picture of the entire life and civilisation of one single age. The faint variations in the design are not greater than such as mark every moment of culture, for in all there is some movement; in all, cases are modified by circumstances. If our contention be true, it will follow that the poems themselves, as wholes, are the product of a single age, not a mosaic of the work of several changeful centuries. This book is annotated with a rare extensive biographical sketch of the author, Andrew Lang, written by Sir Edmund Gosse, CB, a contemporary poet and writer. Contents: Preface Chapter I - The Homeric Age Chapter Ii - Hypotheses As To The Growth Of The Epics Chapter Iii - Hypotheses Of Epic Composition Chapter Iv - Loose Feudalism: The Over-Lord In "Iliad," Books I. And Ii. Chapter V - Agamemnon In The Later "Iliad" Chapter Vi - Archaeology Of The "Iliad". Burial And Cremation Chapter Vii - Homeric Armour Chapter Viii - The Breastplate Chapter Ix - Bronze And Iron Chapter X - The Homeric House Chapter Xi - Notes Of Change In The "Odyssey" Chapter Xii - Linguistic Proofs Of Various Dates Chapter Xiii - The "Doloneia" Chapter Xiv- The Interpolations Of Nestor Chapter Xv - The Comparative Study Of Early Epics Chapter Xvi - Homer And The French Mediaeval Epics Chapter Xvii - Conclusion

Andrew Lang (1844-1912) was a prolific Scots man of letters, a poet, novelist, literary critic and contributor to anthropology. He now is best known as the collector of folk and fairy tales. As a journalist, poet, critic and historian, he soon made a reputation as one of the ablest and most versatile writers of the day. Lang was one of the founders of the study of "Psychical Research," and his other writings on anthropology include The Book of Dreams and Ghosts (1897), Magic and Religion (1901) and The Secret of the Totem (1905). He was a Homeric scholar of conservative views. Other works include Homer and the Epic (1893); a prose translation of The Homeric Hymns (1899), with literary and mythological essays in which he draws parallels between Greek myths and other mythologies; and Homer and his Age (1906). He also wrote Ballades in Blue China (1880) and Rhymes à la Mode (1884).

An old Scottish lady, many generations ago, used to say, 'It is a great comfort to think that, at the Day of Judgment, we shall know the whole truth about the Gowrie Conspiracy at last.' Since the author, as a child, read 'The Tales of a Grandfather,' and shared King Jamie's disappointment when there was no pot of gold, but an armed man, in the turret, he had supposed that we do know all about the Gowrie Conspiracy, that it was a plot to capture the King, carry him to Fastcastle, and 'see how the country would take it,' as in the case of the Gunpowder Plot. But just as Father Gerard has tried to show that the Gunpowder affair may have been Cecil's plot, so modern historians doubt whether the Gowrie mystery was not a conspiracy by King James himself. This book is annotated with a rare extensive biographical sketch of the author, Andrew Lang, written by Sir Edmund Gosse, CB, a contemporary poet and writer. Contents: Introduction I. The Mystery And The Evidence II. The Slaughter Of The Ruthvens III. The King's Own Narrative IV. The King's Narrative-II. The Man In The Turret V. Henderson's Narrative VI. The Strange Case Of Mr. Robert Oliphant VII. The Contemporary Ruthven Vindication VIII. The Theory Of An Accidental Brawl IX. Contemporary Clerical Criticism X. Popular Criticism Of The Day XI. This work of the well-known historian and man-of-letters, Mr. Andrew Lang, is not a biography at all; it is a controversial pamphlet of large size, the thesis of which is a quotation from ' The Diurnal' under the date of Knox's death: ' John Knox, minister, deceased, who had, as was alleged, the most part of the blame of all the sorrows of Scotland since the slaughter of the late Cardinal.' From the beginning to the end of his book, Mr. Lang employs all the resources of his literary art, irony, denunciation, special pleading, to discredit the great Reformer. He attributes to him the principles of a Macchiavelli, and a prudence that led him to shun dangers to himself however ready he might be to denounce others who showed like prudence. He accuses Knox of numberless misstatements in his History, extending even to the perversion of the facts of history to justify his acts and those of his party. On nearly every page is a fling at Knox, the following being an example: ' Knox, as to the doctrine of " killing no murder," was a man of his time. But Knox, in telling the story of a murder which he approves, unhappily displays a glee unbecoming a reformer of the Church of Him who blamed St. Peter for his recourse to the sword. The very essence of Christianity is cast to the winds when Knox utters his laughter over the murders or misfortunes of his opponents, yielding " to the strong propensity which he felt to indulge his vein of humour." Other good men rejoiced in the murder of an enemy, but Knox chuckled.' This is not fair play, though it be sharp writing. It is to be admitted that Mr. Lang carries us with him in many of his attacks upon the consistency and spirit of the Reformer, but he himself ' chuckles' overmuch, and allows far too little for the spirit of the time that shapes the character and thought of even its leaders and heroes.

The book: This is the peculiar title of a book that is making something of a literary sensation. This brilliant study of the betrayal and extinction of Jacobitism has triumphantly solved a mystery which once baffled all Europe. History has so far sought in vain to follow the wanderings and intrigues of Prince Charles Edward, the Young Pretender, after his expulsion from France in the last days of 1748. "From this time forward," says Lord Stanhope, writing of the time when the Prince quitted Avignon early in 1749, "his proceedings during many years are wrapped in mystery; all his correspondence passed through the hands of Mr. Walters"--according to Mr. Lang the name should be Waters-"his banker at Paris, even his warmest partisans were seldom made acquainted with his place of abode, and though he still continued to write to his father at intervals, his letters were never dated. Neither friends nor enemies at that time could obtain any certain information of his movements or designs. Now, however, it is known that he visited Venice and Germany, that he resided secretly for some time at Paris, that he undertook a mysterious journey to England in 1750, and perhaps another in 1752 or 1753; but his principal residence was in the territory of his friend the Dukede Bouillon, where, surrounded by the wide and lonely forest of Ardennes, his active spirit sought in the dangerous chase of boars and wolves an image of the warlike enterprise which was denied him. It was not till the death of his father in 1766 that he returned to Rome and became reconciled to his brother. But his character had darkened with his fortunes." By a patient study of documents still preserved in the British Museum, the Royal Library at Windsor, and elsewhere, and still for the most part unpublished, and by a laborious collation of these new materials with others more accessible, Mr.

King Arthur, accompanied by Merlin the magician, had left the comfort of the court to seek adventures. He had fought a hard battle with the tallest Knight in all the land, and though he struck hard and well, he would have been slain had not Merlin enchanted the Knight and cast him into a deep sleep, and brought the King to a hermit who had studied the art of healing, and cured all his wounds in three days. Then Arthur and Merlin waited no longer, but gave the hermit thanks and departed.
